OUR BELIEFS

The Apostles' Creed

This Sunday's Sermon Theme from

1 Peter 1:5 and 2 Corinthians 5:17 Kept and Empowered by the Spirit

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,

And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried.

He descended into hell.
The third day He rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of God
the Father Almighty.
From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

From Luther's Small Catechism:

What has the Holy Spirit wrought in you by the Gospel?

The Holy Spirit has, by the Gospel, kept me in the true faith.

In whom does the Holy Spirit likewise work all that He has wrought in you?

The Holy Spirit calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian Church on earth and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith.

Does the Holy Spirit desire to work all this in everyone who hears the Gospel?

The Holy Spirit desires to bring all to salvation by the Gospel.

Why, then, are not all saved?

Because many in unbelief stubbornly resist the Word and the Spirit of God and are thus lost by their own fault.
the holy Christian Church,
the communion of saints;

the forgiveness of sins;
the resurrection of the body;
and the life everlasting. Amen.
